My brother and I just recently put another tranny in his firebird, and we had to get the driveshaft cut down by 3 inches due to the tranny being longer than the one we took out.
Has anyone ever had this problem before??

Only when not using the proper trans. Was it a 350 trans? The TH350 comes in 3 different lengths. The one that belongs in Firebirds and most cars is the 3" output shaft. The 6" is for trucks, some vans and even fewer cars. Usualy the 6" is with the Cheverolet bolt pattern. 12" is very rear. Only seen this one in old BIG cars.

I have replaced a 700r4 with a TH350 in a third gen (works great with 3.08 gears) and was able to use the same driveshaft.  Matter of fact, all I had to do was lengthen the transmission mount hole on the crossmember.   What year bird and what transmission did you take out / put in?

The 9" sro out of a chevy truck/van would have been the same length as your 700. BTW, How about your rear trailing arm that bolts to the trans? I don't care for the conversions with the lack of overdrive and the difference in the 1st gear ratio.

Oh, I forgot to mention I used the tailstock from the 700, the torque arm mounted right up.  I agree about the lower first gear in the TH350, but it gives you a longer first which can be quite nasty on the street or at the track.

When you use the 700 tail on the 9" 350 you are lacking the support for the tail bushing to driveshaft yoke. Might want to recheck that....since you like to visit the track.  Wink

Cheesy  much better! I personaly like the 700 and build them for lots of different high-performance applications. Had one in a HO Camaro I once owned that turned sideways everytime it shifted to 2nd....it was a lot of fun to drive  Cheesy
