I just now got a 86 Pontiac Firebird.  There is some rust, is my best bet just to cut the rust out then fiberglass it??

Is that the best thing i could do?

IMHO always cut out rust...as it always seems to come back if you don't. Where your rust is dictates available options for repair. Fiberglass is a good choice though.

Its just my opinion, but if you cut out rusty steel, replace it with steel. You can either make or purchase patch panels for many cars and they are fairly in-exspensive.  B)
