Ok maybe someone can help me out I have a 1981 Trans Am that has I think either a 301 or a 305 it has a turbo on it either way not the point i wanted to know what will fit in place of that motor like a 455 or 400 cause im looking at making the car into a weekend racer but also something i can cruse in and have that major power sound under the hood

Actually, it matters quite a bit on which motor, unless you plan on changing transmissions also. :ph34r:

As long as it's a v8 the bellhousing should match up. You may have to put the tranny support in diffrent holes. I'd get a 454 Chevy and bolt it on in there. You'd be best with a turbo 400 or a Muncie M22 if your want a 4 speed. Options are endless. Good luck with your project.

Actually a 301 is a pontiac motor with a Pontiac Bellhousing which is quite different from that of a Chevrolet
The 301 was the turbo motor. 305 is Chevrolet and was not an option in your car, but could have been installed by someone throughout it;s life. If the 301 is what is in it, the trans will bolt up to Olds, Pontiac, GMC and Cadillac. If it is a manual, you could change bell housings.
Beware though if the trans is a TH200 which would not hold up behind any real HP without a lot of mods. A TH350 or TH400 would be a much better choice if it is automatic.
