69 firebird stalls

I have a 1969 firebird.Just recently it would not start.found out there was no spark to the distributor.My son ran a wire from the battery to the distributor.I turned the key started right up .Had to remove the wire to turn it off.Then i removed some tape from the wire to the distributor and cleaned the connector up that was taped .Started it again and 5 seconds later it stalls.I replaced the connector.Same results.The only thing that i had done previously before this problem was changed the steering wheel.Anyone have any input on what can be wrong?By the way i also have the instument panel out as of now.I had alot of lhanging wires im fiixing.lighter,clock and small light bulbs.I had the car running lastweek.I changed the steering wheel this week then i had the problem.Thanks John

Might want to have a look at the wiring coming from the ignition switch that goes to the coil. There is a wiring diagram on the site at http://firebird.gttransmissions.com/firebird%20wiring.htm If you need better copies, I'll be glad to scan them and send them via pdf.
