I am in the process of restoring an '86 Trans Am and have done the 350 swap. Although I took the easy way out and went with a 4 bbl carb.

Check out my site and let me know what other questions you may have.

Sorry .. I don't use aol.
The problem will come in trying to use your old intake. The cheapest and most readily available small blocks are going to be pre-86 models, and (assuming you are going to keep the TPI) your lower intake will not mount to the older style heads without some serious modifications. If you go the route of buying a rebuilt long block from a major auto parts chain they will provide a motor with the correct heads for your application, but those motors are usually painfully stock and low on power. You could always find a pre-86 short block and purchase the Edelbrock aluminum heads to fit your application, but then you will be limited by the stock TPI capabilities ( I think your year flows a measely 390 cfm ). You could add a 58mm throttle body and some 24 lb injectors if that is within your budget .... plan on spending near $1000 just for the TPI mods. If you are in an area with no smog restrictions as I am you should switch to a carb and buy an older style motor.
As for the rest, there shouldn't be any problems ... everything is compatible. Just go ahead and pull the motor and trans all at once ... you'll save yourself a lot of time and headaches.  Also, I would suggest changing your motor mounts while you have everything out.
